For the past several years, Brett Van Ort has been photographing landscapes that are, on the surface, pristine, natural, and seemingly unaffected but in reality harbor a hidden danger. For this particular project he focused on the front line areas of the Bosnian War. Fought from 1992-1995, the Bosnian war left a legacy of minefields that continues to affect economic vitality, psychological health and social interaction. The landscapes, photographed during 2009, were part of the estimated 3.5% of the country that was still considered a minefield. The mines cost anywhere from $3 to $10 to produce, while clearing a square meter of mined ground costs approximately $1000. The prosthetics shown cost anywhere from $1500 to $32,000 to produce and have a lifespan of 3 to 7 years. Bosnia and Herzegovina hopes to be mine free by 2017–22 years after the conclusion of hostilites there.
