For the past 3 years, Binh Danh has been making daguerreotypes of a memorial site called “The Crosses of Lafayette,” in Lafayette, California. This memorial started in November 2006 to protest the continuing escalation of the Iraq war by representing each American soldier killed in Iraq with a cross. At the top of the hill, a sign displays the death count — over 5000 crosses. As an American and an immigrant, Binh has enjoyed this amazing freedom, but it also comes at a cost to actual lives of our men and women who defend it. We can easily ignore this painful reality of their and their families’ sacrifice.
