Every time Monica Denevan travels to Burma she is struck by the meditative beauty of the landscape, the sensory chaos of the cities, and the quiet elegance of the people. However, much of the news and images coming out of Burma are exceedingly ugly, a reality most tourists, herself included, are kept away from. Monica prefers to photograph the people she spends her time with, fishermen and their families who live and work in villages outside the cities, next to the river. In that spare and graphic setting, she makes intimate portraits mostly of the men she has encountered, in isolated and stylized poses. Her impression is that much of the country reminds her of early 20th century travel images and she uses that look as the backdrop for her photographs.
