These photographs document the fifty-mile flow of water down the Los Angeles River and its tributaries: from a natural state, into a flood channel built by the Army Corps of Engineers in the 1930’s, and out into the ocean at the Port of Los Angeles. This river is a metaphor for the City of Los Angeles. It cuts through all cultures, economic strata, running below the surface of the city, and provides a fifty-mile long concrete canvas for many disaffected residents whose neighborhoods and lives it cuts through.
