For her series Envisioning Habitat, artist Cheryl Medow constructs multi-layered images from photographs she has taken on her travels around the world. These images, real and imagined, highlight the timeless beauty and grandeur of the avian world.
Medow draws inspiration from the Hudson River School painters who, with sketchpads, set off into the field to gather the elements for their paintings, selectively combining scenes on canvas in the studio. One could not find a particular painting’s location because it didn’t exist in the real world. Similarly, Medow has for the last two decades photographed nature in search of a combination of image to landscape that matches her excitement about the world around her.
In 2015, National Geographic wrote about Medow’s work in its PROOF blog: “The Art of Birds, Revealed Through An Altered Reality.” Medow received First Place in the International Photographic Awards (Digitally Enhanced category) and was a finalist in LensCulture: Earth Awards 2015.
